Happy Sixth Birthday, Evan!

Evan turned six years old last week.  What a year he's had!  In the last twelve months...

...he's traveled.  He visited 20 states on vacation, saw Disney World, the Atlantic Ocean, Washington, D.C., Dallas/Ft. Worth, & Omaha.

...he got glasses.  He didn't fuss once.  He had to get his eyes dilated - and that stings.  He got his glasses, broke a couple of pair, and is learning how to be more responsible with them.

...he's learned to read.  He reads the Levels 2 & 3 "Step Into Reading" books.  Last night he read 56 pages of "Frog and Toad" on his own after lights out. He had excellent teachers & a small teacher-to-student ratio last year.  His reading exploded in about February.  Once he learned all of the rules (which he loved), he memorized his site words and started to decode some seriously big words.  His achievement test had him rated at a 2.3 reading level.

...he's had his tonsils out.  Those nasty things were gone in July, and he was fit as a fiddle all year long.  The flu never found him (knock on wood), and the rebound flu didn't either (even though it found the rest of us in the house).

...he's learned to ride his bike without training wheels.  We got this one in under the wire (about 10 days before his birthday).  While we were in Texas, he borrowed his cousin's bike and gave it a try.  Sometimes it takes people other than Mom or Dad to give the final push (that gets listened to).  Luckily, Cousin Joy and Cousin Ryder were there for encouragement and a tutorial.

...he's learned to tie his shoes.  We decided a few years ago that I'd be the one to teach him since Ev & I are both right-handed.  Mike is a lefty, and I noticed when we were dating that he did it a way I'd never seen.  We sat down this winter and practiced each night.  I taught him 3 different ways to tie his shoes, and he caught on to the "classic" method.

We are proud of all of the growth he's had.
